The following extract is from "Wiltshire Machine Breakers" by Jill Chambers
and refers to Thomas Kilminster
"charged on oaths of James Burt Jordan & others, with having riotously
assembled with divers other persons and destroyed a haymaking machine, the
property of Robert Jarden. Also with having broken three other haymaking
machines, the property of William Poulton, at Cricklade St Sampson" Warrent
dated 29 Nov 1830 from Devizes Old Prison. He confessed and "entered into
recognizance for £50".
Although £50 was a huge amount of money for the time Thomas was in some ways
lucky. Most of the others involved in the same activity were transported to
Australia for their crimes.
Cricklade is commonly divided into two halves; St. Sampsons & St. Marys. St.
Sampsons is the eastern half of the town and St. Marys, the western half.
All of the children were born in St. Sampsons.
