| There may have been a further
child; B. Griffin but nothing is known. David Snr. is listed as a
Widower on his marriage certificate. By 1881 Anne is head of household. Edward, Mary and Emma are still at home. They live in Dark Lane, Chalford. The Demise of David Griffin Snr It transpires that in 1868 David Griffin met a rather premature end. At the time he worked at Bliss Mills in Chalford and also lived on the site with his wife and children. He was a Foreman there. Another Foreman was one of his friends; One John Hemming. According to reports in the Stroud Journal of the time the too friends got into a fight and John struck David on the head with a heavy piece of wood. "The injury was so great that the poor fellow died on Saturday" (1st Feb. 1868). John Hemming was committed for trial by both the local Magistrates and the Coroner. Hemming was sentenced at Gloucester Assizes but was only sentenced to 2 weeks (due to the circumstances and his remorse). Anne was pregnant with her last daughter (Emma) at the time whom she gave birth to later that year. A funeral report and an account of the court proceedings can be found in the Stroud Journal of the time and may eventually appear here.

Edward Griffin (b.1860 Chalford) is known to have had two sons; Clement & Albert but I do not know who his wife was nor any of their details. |
|
| There's a bit of confusion about these two fellows. It might well be that the photo's are of the same person years apart and not Clem and Albert as captioned. If anyone can help sort this out I'd be grateful. | |
